EDUC 381 - Language, Literacy, and CultureCredits: 3 In this course students will study concepts, theories, and research related to the nature and acquisition of second languages so as to construct learning environments that support culturally and linguistically diverse learners' literacy, language development and content-area achievement. Students will learn instructional strategies for teaching English Learners in content areas. People's attitudes toward linguistic diversity worldwide will also be explored. A portion of the course will focus on developing global competence in teacher candidates. The course will cover a plethora of themes including: theories of second language acquisition, assessment and assessment bias, the four traditional language skills, primary language support, language and identity, world migration, bilingualism and identity, bilingualism and program models, Ebonics and bidialectalism, code-switching, heritage language maintenance, global language policy, language shift, world Englishes, and global interconnectedness.
