Health Informatics & Information Management (BSHIIM)

The BSHIIM program will combine concepts in healthcare, information technology, and management practice to provide graduates with the knowledge needed to be a valuable designer, implementer, and manager of health information systems. The BSHIIM program is clearly designed for a wide range of students, including those who have just graduated from high school or adult learners who want to return to school and complete their bachelor’s degree. Transfer programs from two-year campuses are being developed, so learners can begin their education at local community colleges and then transfer to USI to complete their bachelor’s degree. In addition to traditional students, many students with Information Technology (IT) or health care preparation at the associates level, such as associates degree prepared nurses or Health Information Management (HIM) professionals, can complete the HIIM Bachelor’s program. USI will offer all of its courses as distance courses as well as traditional classroom-based courses.

Admission Requirements

A review of the admission application occurs after completion of 29 hours of required courses (see the curriculum for specific courses required in the 1st year).  Students admitted in the BSHIIM program will begin discipline-specific courses in the following spring semester.

The BSHIIM program consists of 120 credit hours of coursework leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Informatics and Information Management (HIIM).  The program includes 40 credit hours from University core courses, 18 credit hours of required pre-admission courses, 48 credit hours of required HIIM courses, one general elective at any level (3 cred hours) and six credit hours selected from elective course offerings at 300-400 level.

Students must have completed all of the pre-admission courses (see below) with a grade of “C” or better before the beginning of the HIIM program. The first-year classes MUST be completed by all students before August 1.  Students should apply for admission to the BSHIIM major by August 1.

Admission to the program will be based on the following criteria:

  • Applicants must have a grade point average of at least 2.75 or above in the first-year prerequisite courses based on a 4.0 scale.
  • Completion of all required pre-admission courses.

Once in the program, students will have to maintain a minimum level of performance (no lower than a “C” grade) in each of the BSHIIM courses to progress to the next semester of the program.
