Health Informatics & Information Management, B.S.H.I.I.M.

College of Nursing and Health Professions >> Health Informatics and Information Management

The BSHIIM program combines concepts in healthcare, information technology, and management practice to provide graduates with the knowledge needed to be a valuable designer, implementer, and manager of health information systems. The BSHIIM program is clearly designed for a wide range of students, including those who have just graduated from high school or adult learners who want to return to school and complete their bachelor’s degree. Transfer programs from two-year campuses are being developed, so learners can begin their education at local community colleges and then transfer to USI to complete their bachelor’s degree. In addition to traditional students, many students with Information Technology (IT) or health care preparation at the associates level, such as associates degree prepared nurses or Health Information Management (HIM) professionals, can complete the HIIM Bachelor’s program. USI will offer all of its courses as distance courses as well as traditional classroom-based courses.

Admission Requirements

A review of the admission application occurs after all prerequisite admission courses are in progress or completed.  Students admitted in the BSHIIM program will begin discipline-specific courses in the following semester.  Application deadlines are October 1 and March 1.

The BSHIIM program consists of 120 credit hours of coursework leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Informatics and Information Management (HIIM).  The program includes 40 credit hours from University core courses, 18 credit hours of required pre-admission courses, 48 credit hours of required HIIM courses, one general elective at any level (3 credit hours) and six credit hours selected from elective course offerings at 300-400 level.

Required Prerequisite Courses - Students must have completed all of the following courses with a grade of “C” or better before beginning HI classes. All prerequisite classes must be in progress or completed before students can apply to the program.  .

Admission to the program will be based on the following criteria:

  • Applicants must have a grade point average of at least 2.75 or above in the prerequisite courses based on a 4.0 scale.
  • All required prerequisite courses must be completed or in progress.  Students with prerequisite courses in progress will receive conditional admittance pending completion with adequate GPA.

Once in the program, students will have to maintain a minimum level of performance (no lower than a “C” grade) in each of the required HI courses to progress to the next semester of the program.
