Communal Studies Minor

College of Liberal Arts >> History

18 hours; 2.0 minor GPA required

Courses fulfilling the Communal Studies Minor may be offered in the classroom, online or as blended classes. Rice Library and nearby New Harmony have abundant resources related to Communal Studies that instructors can incorporate into their classes. The Communal Studies minor will be administered in the History department, but the coursework will be interdisciplinary, with elective options in Anthropology, Arts and Heritage Administration, Communications, Economics, Management, Marketing, Social Work, Sociology and World Languages and Cultures. Courses in the minor can explore the diverse history and social, economic and political structure of current communal experiments in the United States and the world. Many communal experiments had a “utopian” element to them, which will be explored in humanities courses such as English and World Languages and Cultures. The Center for Communical Studies’ research resources provide abundant opportunities to study human behavior at fundamental levels in the social microcosms of communal societies.
