ENG 224 - Social Change in American CultureCredits: 3 U.S. literature has a long history of imagining and advocating for a more ethical world, and writing, especially African American writing, has been a tool for making that world a reality. This course acts as an introduction to Black literary writings from the nineteenth century to the present, with special focus on dueling definition of freedom, citizenship, and justice. Students will analyze texts to understand their moral and philosophical perspectives, think through various strategies for achieving social change, and learn about the role of popular culture in creating an ethical society.
