MATH 653 - Teaching and Learning Algebraic Reasoning Credits: 3
The course focuses on the content and teaching of algebraic reasoning in grades K-6. Algebraic reasoning is the study of patterns, a symbolic language, a tool for problem solving, generalized arithmetic, and a way of modeling physical situations. We will learn about various ways algebraic reasoning is represented and the critical features of primary functions. We will learn various instructional tools that are mathematically and pedagogically grounded, develop learning progressions, sequence activities to establish appropriate benchmarks based on understanding of state and national curricular materials and assessment tools. This course is not intended to prepare individuals to teach post-secondary or dual credit mathematics courses.
