MATH 652 - Teaching and Learning Rational Numbers & Proportional Reasoning

Credits: 3

The course is designed to develop your understanding of rational numbers and proportional relationships. We will learn about research on the learning and teaching of these concepts, focusing on how children think about and learn these concepts. Specifically, we will learn ways to concretely represent abstract concepts related to rational numbers and proportional reasoning. Additionally, we will learn how to design, select, and modify mathematical tasks to support students learning and how to sequence and structure lessons to build toward the big mathematical ideas of rational numbers and proportional reasoning. This course is not intended to prepare individuals to teach post-secondary or dual credit mathematics courses.
