College of Liberal Arts >> English

42 hours + Secondary Education Lincensure Minor (grades 5-12)

English Teaching at the Unversity of Southern Indiana prepares students to teach literature, composition and reading comprehension in elementary and secondary schools. In coordination with licensure programs in the Teacher Education Department, coursework addresses pedagogical issues in teaching English, and provides a strong background in areas such as literature, rhetoric and writing. The English department offers a major in English Teaching and minors in English Teaching and Langague Arts Teaching.

The major in English Teaching culminates in the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree. A bachelor’s degree in English Teaching prepares students for careers in secondary education (grades five through twelve) and requires completion of the Seconday Education Licensure minor. Additional admission requirements through the Teacher Education Department may apply. Students entering the English teaching program should review the College of Liberal Arts Teacher Licensure.

Students planning to teach English in elementary schools (pre-kindergarten through grade six) should complete the English Teaching minor or Language Arts Teaching minor. Teacher licensure should be completed through a major in early childhood educaiton, elementary education or special education, offered through the Teacher Education Department.
