History Teaching (optional)

For students seeking licensure to teach history (grades 5-12), the optional history teaching emphasis identifies courses of greatest benefit. In response to changes in teacher licensing and preparation, a multi-subject Social Science Teaching major is no longer offered. Under the new system, students are required to complete a degree in a particular social science area (such as History) and the Secondary Education Licensure Minor.

* Students seeking to teach history as a secondary school teacher (grades 5-12) are required to complete the 42 hour History major (including HIST 287 and HIST 397 for area IV), 6 additional hours (shown below), and the Secondary Education Licensure minor. Students completing a teacher education program must earn at least a 2.75 cumulative GPA, a 2.75 major GPA, a 2.75 GPA in the secondary education licensure minor, and a grade of C or better in all courses applied toward degree requirements.
