Africana Studies Minor

College of Liberal Arts >> History

18 hours; 2.0 minor GPA required

This minor is comprised of two required courses (six credit hours) and four electives (twelve credit hours) derived from three separate areas. Students must take the required Introduction to Africana Studies and Africana Perspectives courses. The introductory course will serve as an overview to the interdisciplinary topics and methods of Africana Studies. It will be both a recruitment tool for the minor and will be an elective that exposes non-Africana Studies minors to the discipline. The Africana Perspectives course will be an interdisciplinary inquiry into the history, challenges, and forms of Africana Studies that engages contemporary and historical approaches. Students will explore academic disciplines, as well as material beyond the academy, including art, folk culture, language, literature, music, and social movements. Additionally, minors must complete 12 credit hours of electives, with at least one course taken in each area.
