Diagnostic Medical Sonography, General Sonography and Vascular Specialty, B.S.

College of Nursing and Health Professions >> Diagnostic Medical Sonography

The Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) Program provides a curriculum which includes didactic courses in conjunction with laboratory and clinical experiences. The DMS curriculum consists of 1 1/2 years of pre-requisite general education courses, 1 1/2 years of General Sonography coursework (physics, abdomen, OB/GYN), and one year of either Vascular Sonography or Cardiac Sonography coursework. Completion of these four years results in a Bachelor of Science degree. The student will be eligible to apply for credentialing examinations administered by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS). The DMS program at USI is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) on recommendation by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS) in Abdominal-Extended, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Vascular, and Adult Cardiac specialties.

For additional information about the DMS program, including admission requirements, refer to the Diagnostic Medical Sonography section of the bulletin.

Students interested in the Radiologic and Imaging Sciences major should refer to the Radiologic and Imaging Sciences section of the bulletin for an overview of the program, including available tracks and admission requirements.

Diagnostic Medical Sonography Curriculum

All DMS students complete three years of common curriculum, including Core 39, then select one of two options to complete degree requirements:

  • General Sonography + Echocardiography Specialty
  • General Sonography + Vascular Specialty

A grade of C or better is required in all DMS, DVT, and ECHO courses, plus select Core 39 courses.  A typical semester-by-semester class schedule is shown here.
