Health Informatics and Information Management

The mission of the Health Informatics and Information Management program is to provide students with specialized training in using information technology to support effective health care administration, innovative health care services delivery, secure patient-centric health care, leadership skills, quality assurance, finance and legal and regulatory requirements.

Why choose Health Informatics and Information Management?

Developed in response to the changes and demands of the health care industry, the Bachelor of Science in Health Informatics and Information Management (BSHIIM) is designed for a wide range of students including those who have just graduated from high school or adult learners who want to return to school and complete their bachelor’s degree. Transfer programs from two-year campuses are being developed, so learners can begin their education at local community colleges and then transfer to USI to complete their bachelor’s degree. In addition to traditional students, many students with Information Technology (IT) or health care preparation at the associate’s level, such as associates degree prepared nurses or Health Information Management professionals, can complete the HIIM bachelor’s program. Discipline-specific courses will be offered as distance courses as well as traditional classroom-based courses.

USI’s BSHIIM program will combine concepts in health care, information technology, and management practice to provide graduates with the knowledge needed to be a valuable designer, implementer, and manager of health information systems. This degree, geared to the needs of the current workplace, will also allow students from other disciplines to complement their existing field of expertise (e.g. computer information systems, liberal arts, and others).

The BSHIIM degree will provide the following:

  • Competency-based education in informatics and information management that will allow students to prepare for graduate work either at USI or elsewhere.
  • Learning experiences that will equip students with principles and tools that focus on information systems, informatics principles and information technology as applied to the continuum of health care delivery.
  • Various professional options that could qualify students for higher-earning positions.

What can you do with a Health Informatics and Information Management degree?

By studying health informatics and information management, students will acquire a versatile yet focused skill set incorporating clinical, information technology, leadership, and management skills. Because of this unique blend, BSHIIM graduates will be able to choose from a variety of work settings across an array of health care environments.
