Mathematical Sciences

All students who enroll in math classes at USI are given an opportunity to increase their level of mathematical knowledge, to improve their analytical and problem-solving skills, and to develop an appreciation for the applicability of mathematics. Since the mathematical requirements of the student population differ depending on the individual’s particular educational goals, the Mathematical Sciences department has designed a variety of programs of study as well as specific courses to meet these needs. Programs are offered for students in four distinct areas: students seeking a major in mathematics, mathematics/actuarial track, mathematics teaching, or statistics; students pursuing minors in mathematics or statistics; students requiring a course to satisfy the mathematics component of Core 39; and students completing a program of study outside the Mathematical Sciences department, but having one or more mathematics requirements within their major.

Mathematics courses are sequential; therefore, the Mathematical Sciences department has mandatory placement and/or prerequisites for all mathematics courses. Except for developmental courses, students are only permitted to enroll in those courses for which they have successfully fulfilled all of the prerequisites. Prerequisite courses may not be taken Pass/No Pass. After a student has completed a course successfully, he or she may not enroll in a prerequisite course without the approval of the chair of the department. Entering freshmen may take advanced placement tests and receive credit by examination in certain specified courses. For further information, students should contact Undergraduate Admission.

The mathematics foundational component of Core 39 may be satisfied by successfully completing MATH 107 , MATH 111 , MATH 114 , MATH 215  or MATH 230 . Some majors specify which course is required for the program.

Degree Programs

Students majoring in mathematics, mathematics teaching, or statistics may pursue either a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts degree. Throughout the mathematics section(s) of the bulletin, reference to upper-level courses relates to courses numbered 251 or above, with the exception of MATH 291 , MATH 391 , MATH 392 , MATH 393 , STAT 436  (elective for statistics minor only), and MATH 375 .
