College of Nursing and Health Professions  >> Health Informatics and Information Management

The BSHIIM program combines concepts in health care, information technology, and management practice to provide graduates with the knowledge needed to be a valuable designer, implementer, and manager of health information systems. The BSHIIM program is clearly designed for a wide range of students, including those who have just graduated from high school or adult learners who want to return to school and complete their bachelor’s degree. Transfer programs from two-year campuses are being developed, so learners can begin their education at local community colleges and then transfer to USI to complete their bachelor’s degree. In addition to traditional students, many students with Information Technology (IT) or health care preparation at the associate’s level, such as associates degree prepared nurses or Health Information Management (HIM) professionals, can complete the HIIM Bachelor’s program. USI offers all of these courses online as well as traditional classroom-based courses.

Admission Requirements

A review of the admission application occurs after all prerequisite admission courses are in progress or completed. Students admitted in the BSHIIM program begin discipline-specific courses in the following semester. Application deadlines are October 1 and March 1.

The BSHIIM program consists of 120 credit hours of coursework leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Informatics and Information Management (HIIM). The program includes 40 credit hours from University core courses, 18 credit hours of required pre-admission courses, 48 credit hours of required HIIM courses, one general elective at any level (3 credit hours) and six credit hours selected from elective course offerings at 300-400 level.
