The human lactation certificate provides a foundation of knowledge necessary to adequately support a breastfeeding dyad. The required courses focus on basic nutrition, anatomy and physiology of lactation, common lactation issues, and lactation support in community and clinical settings. The courses have a dyad-focused approach to lactation management by focusing on both the mother and baby experience.
Students must achieve a grade of C or better in all required courses. The certificate is open to all majors and minors at USI and members of the community.

Undergraduate Certificate Requirements
- Credit hours earned for a certificate may be applied toward another degree program.
- A minimum of 6 credit hours toward the certificate must be completed at the University.
- Coursework taken more than 4 years before the certificate is awarded may not be applied toward certificate requirements.
- Students earning an undergraduate certificate are not eligible to participate in commencement exercises, but the credential will be added to their official transcript record.
